How to Handmade or Diy Electric Bike with an E-bike Motor Kit?

Do you want to know how to Diy electric bike with an Ebike motor kit?

This article is for you.

An electric bike is easier to construct than you would expect!

Using a conversion kit simplifies and expedites the procedure; all you need is a functional bike, a conversion kit, and a battery. And if you search online for the most excellent value on the kit and reuse an existing bike, this may be a low-cost DIY.

Materials

Choose mountain bike disc brakes and broad handlebars.

If you don't already have a bike, look online or in your neighborhood for a used bike at a reasonable price. Fortunately, you can use almost any bike you have on hand, although specific qualities will provide the most remarkable results:

  • Choose a bike with 26", 20", or 16" wheels since these are the most prevalent sizes. Smaller wheels are seen on folding bikes as faster, bumpier, and less efficient at cruising speed.
  • Mountain bikes are usually converted to electric bikes, although any kind would do as long as it has a robust frame and a standard bottom bracket. Use a bike that does not have a carbon fiber frame or forks since they are not strong enough to hold the increased weight or withstand the higher torque.
  • Wider handlebars are preferable since they provide enough space for your attachments and lighting.
  • Front disc brakes will let you stop more easily on steep climbs.

Purchase an electric bike conversion kit.

A conversion kit will significantly simplify the procedure if you've never constructed an electric bicycle. A throttle, a wheel with a hub motor, and a speed controller are included in these bolt-on kits. Some models have gauges, displays, and brake levers. However, these are not required.

  • Check that the kit includes a wheel that is the same size as the wheels on your bike! Because of the arrangement of the gears, it is much simpler to repair the front wheel than the rear. Therefore choose a kit with the hub motor on the front wheel.
  • Mainly, the battery does not include in the conversion kit. However, the battery and converter kit should be purchased from the same vendor for installation convenience.

Choose a 36 or 48 volt 10Ah or 20Ah battery.

Consider purchasing an electric bicycle battery since it will come with a charger and be simpler to put in place. The battery you choose must be compatible with the conversion kit you bought in both voltage and capacity. You may increase your bike's power by increasing the voltage of its battery. Choose a 36- or 48-volt battery for an electric bike to maximize speed and comfort.

  • The battery's capacity determines how long it will survive. A 10Ah battery will be enough for short travels, while a 20Ah battery will offer you sufficient power for somewhat longer journeys.

Wheel Replacement

Remove the worn wheel.

Start by opening the rim or cantilever brake using the lever, and then proceed with the rest of the procedure (if applicable). Do not remove any clamps or springs holding the disc brake pads in place if the bike has disc brakes. With needle-nose pliers, remove the pads and lay them aside.

  • To remove the front wheel, switch the quick-release lever to the "open" position while the bike is resting on the saddle and handlebars. After that, all you have to do is remove the bike's front wheel.
  • Remove the bike's rear wheel by crouching down behind it and pulling it out. With your non-dominant hand, hold the frame and pull the derailer backward with your dominant hand. Then, using your dominant hand, push the bike frame away from the back wheel and disconnect the chain.

Transfer the old tire and inner tube to the new wheel.

Allow the old tire to deflate before removing it from the wheel using a tire lever. Remove the tire as well as the inner tube. Reverse the procedure to put the tire and inner tube on the conversion kit's wheel.

Install the electronic hub wheel and attach the braking components.

To replace the wheel:

  1. Reverse the technique you used to remove it. If you're changing the back wheel, make sure the chain is correctly adjusted.
  2. If the bike has a rim or cantilever brakes, use the lever to shut them over the new wheel.
  3. If the bike has disc brakes, replace the pads and attach them with the clips, springs, cotter, or retaining pin.
  • Pump the brake lever or align the calipers if mechanical brakes are used to make necessary adjustments to the brakes (for hydraulic brakes).

Final Installations

Connect the speed controller and throttle.

Install these two sections using the provided hardware according to the instructions in the conversion kit. Use the supplied bolts to fasten the speed controller to the bike's frame above the chain. Attach the throttle to the handlebars, so it's easily accessible.

  • Attach any other accessories you may have. Attach the speed sensor to the rear wheel and use the provided hardware to attach any displays and gauges to the handlebars.

Auxiliary power for the speed controller and throttle

To connect each component, follow the instructions supplied with the kit. Typically, you'll need to put the speed controller's connection into the battery's connector and then repeat the throttle procedure. Avoid touching the battery cables together, as this might result in a deadly spark!

Attach the battery to the bike.

Most e-bike batteries replace a water bottle holder on the frame. This position maintains the center of gravity low. Attach the battery to the frame using the provided hardware.

  • You may also put the battery in a box or basket on the front or rear of the bike if it is too big to fit on the frame (above 60 volts).

Fix any slack cords.

Zip-tie loose sections to the frame. Keep in mind safety as you don't want any cords to get stuck.

Ride your e-bike.

Done! Now you can ride your e-bike. When you're ready to ride, gently depress the throttle. Take it for a ride in a less crowded location to familiarise yourself with it.

When required, charge the bike.

The e-bike battery comes with a charger, so it's effortless! Connect the battery to the charger as directed and plug it into a suitable outlet.
